- Konsumsi makanan yang dapat meningkatkan penyerapan zat besi, seperti asam askorbat dan sitrat (pepaya, jambu biji, pisang, mangga, semangka, pir, jeruk, lemon, apel, jus nanas, kembang kol, dan limau).

Asam malak dan tartrat (wortel, kentang, tomat, labu, kol, dan lobak cina).
Asam amino sisten (daging, kambing, hati, ayam, dan ikan), serta produk-produk fermentasi (kecap kacang kedelai, acar atau asinan kubis).
Gabungan antara makanan yang mengandung vitamin C dengan zat besi dapat meningkatkan penyerapan zat besi yang lebih baik.
- Hindari makanan yang dapat menghambat penyerapan zat besi dengan waktu bersamaan dengan mengonsumsi makanan yang mengandung zat besi, misalnya seperti fitat (beras, terigu, gandum, kacang kedelai, susu cokelat, kacang dan tumbuhan polong), polifenol (teh, kopi, bayam, kacang, tumbuhan polong, rempah-rempah).
